Eco Church, Swifts

Eco Church

Our Reepham Swifts were very late in returning to breed this year but amazingly, many breed successfully. Alan Dixon counted up to sixty feeding over the meadows alongside Catchback Lane in July. Some had been seen earlier, investigating the nest boxes in St Mary’s tower. After the birds had left for Africa, Alan checked the boxes and found that one pair had made a nest, of feathers, but it didn’t appear to have been used. This may have been because the birds were so late starting to build, collecting suitable feathers while on the wing, that the urge to migrate was stronger than that to breed, or it may have been a young pair who weren’t actually mature enough to do so. Either way, we hope that the same pair will return next year to their readymade nest in which they will raise a brood of chicks.

Please support our Fair Trade Coffee Morning on the 21st September as this will be the final action before we claim our Eco Church Silver Award. It would be good to be able to send a handsome cheque to the Fair Trade Foundation to support small farmers growing sugar cane, bananas, coffee, tea, cocoa, grapes and other produce. The Fair Trade Premium allows the co-operative members to decide for themselves how best they can help their communities.
