Eco Church, July 2025

Eco Church

Thank you to everyone who helped and attended the ‘Afternoon for All’. We were pleased to welcome 10 families with 22 children and 12 other adults who helped identify the wildlife in the churchyard. The games, crafts and refreshments were much appreciated and parents asked that we do something like this more often. The Norfolk Wildlife Trust had asked permission to hold a ‘Swifts in Churchyards’ walk in our churchyard and this took place in late June. This was well attended and ‘our’ Swifts provided several good fly pasts to the delight of those attending. You will be pleased to know that we do have a pair of Swifts using the nest boxes in St Mary’s tower, as two people have seen one, either entering or leaving the top left louvre. It takes the Swifts quite a long time to collect a bolus of aerial insects to feed to their chicks, so patience is needed if you want to see one actually going in or out of the tower. Be on the lookout for Hummingbird Hawkmoths as several have been seen hovering in front of Lavender and other suitable flowers. These small migrant moths are distinguished by their distinctive flight and the grey, orange and white wing pattern Do let me know if you see one in the churchyard as we record all butterfly and moth sightings and have already had Holly Blue, Peacock, Meadow Brown and Gatekeeper butterflies and Mint Moths this year.
