Eco Church, October 2025

Eco Church

As the nights draw in, Hedgehogs fatten up ready to hibernate for the winter. Although they have become much more scarce than they used to be, they do feature on our camera trap from time to time, searching for slugs and other tasty titbits. We can all help these endearing, prickly creatures by not putting down slug pellets, or using other pesticides in the garden. We use covered beer traps to deal the slimy pests. They also need access to drinking water, so put out a shallow dish of water or ensure that there is a suitable access to a garden pond. They can swim but need to be able to get out of the water safely. Also make sure that they can move from one garden to another by ensuring there is a small gap under fences or gates. At this time of year, they will need piles of leaves or sticks under which they can hibernate, these can be left in a quiet corner. They will have had a hard time in the drought conditions this year, so perhaps put out a little cat food for them, if you don’t have visiting cats to your garden, or even the special hedgehog food that is available these days. Hedgehogs, along with slow worms, ladybirds, hoverflies, wasps, frogs, toads, blue tits and other birds are important pest controllers in any organic garden.

Nigel has been Rector of both East Harling and Mattishall and so is no stranger to ministry in Norfolk.
