Caring for God’s Earth – Climate Change
Eco Church
By issuing new licences for gas extraction from the North Sea and scrapping the ban on ‘fracking’, the current government is going back on the pledges made at COP26 last year, that the UK would become carbon neutral by 2050. The burning of fossil fuels, such as natural and shale gases raises the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere which adds to global warming. After the scorching summer we have just had, with temperatures above 400C and 280 wildfires in Norfolk in one day, it should be obvious to everyone that Climate Change is a reality. Glaciers and icecaps are melting at an alarming rate, causing sea levels to rise worldwide and the degrading of many habitats such that their native flora and fauna are fighting for survival. How sad it would be to live in a world without polar bears or penguins, but equally how tragic that people living on low lying islands in the Pacific Ocean are already being forced from their homes due to flooding by the sea. I would encourage you to stand up and say ‘No’ to the new government’s energy policy if we want to give our beautiful world a chance to continue in its current state. I have already written to our M.P. Jerome Mayhew, would you be prepared to do the same, or at least sign a petition calling for a change in policy? Contact Rachel rachel.42rr@btinternet.com
