Eco Church
Thank you to everyone who helped make our Churchyard Afternoon for All such a success: those who came; made cakes; served the refreshments; helped with the activities; took the photos and recorded the wildlife. The sun shone but it wasn’t too hot, and the insects were out in good numbers. We were fortunate to have the Revd. Martin Greenland, Rector of Acle, with us, who has just started a three month sabbatical studying the insects of Norfolk churchyards, and a small band of local enthusiastic naturalists, who together logged over 50 species of insect. Some of the highlights included the Toadflax Brocade moth caterpillars on the Purple Toadflax by the church wall; a Wool Carder bee nectaring on Lambs Ears in one of the gardens and the hatching of Shieldbug nymphs on foliage in the wildlife friendly garden. Thanks also go to Ian and Mark Taylor for doing a moth survey in the churchyard earlier in the week, recording such gems as Burnished Brass and Buff Ermine. Over 100 wild plants were also recorded and Swifts were observed going up into the Swift box in St Mary’s tower that was used last year. It is very good to know that the wildlife in our churchyard is flourishing. All records have been sent to Caring for God’s Acre as part of Churches Count on Nature week.

Greenpeace is currently campaigning to bring back British nature by lobbying the government to provide investment to help farmers reduce their dependency on toxic chemicals, insecticides and weedkillers, which are decimating the wildlife in our countryside and waterways.
